The idea

The idea for the project was all about good fun. We wanted to be children again for a while and at the same time bring some fun to our Clients and Internet Users.

We don’t know anybody, who having spotted the first snow, wouldn’t like to go out and have some snowball fight with friends, family or workmates. When we add an option to shoot at your mates who are working their guts out, from a special cannon made of carton – there’s no better way to feel Christmas atmosphere around…

The Targets

We just love creating, building, coding, making jokes and having fun at the same time. We proved it during the last Great Snowball Fight, engaging Clients, Families and Friends. The main idea behind it was to bring a bit of Christmas entertainment to the Clients, Internet users, and most of all the Netizens.

Netizens got the Power. Thanks to a huge amount of fun we showed our capabilities in the field of new technologies and interactive solutions You have Fun. We wanted to prove that with the interactive solutions and good time you can connect with Netizens from all over the world. We made it and are VERY PROUD about it. Achieving the Passion. Netizens are built of creative and experienced enthusiasts of technology, new media, marketing and design – this is all we wanted to communicate to the world. Nothing is impossible to us, because work is our passion.

Players from all over the world, no login or registration necessary, could virtually maneuver the cannon by clicking the arrows and the fire button – on the screen. Obviously we wouldn’t do without a bit of craziness and rivalry, and that’s why you could earn extra badges for good shots – if you hit special elements located in our office, some of our workmates, or even the Netizens CEO. Next you could brag around with your score on Facebook. In total there were 3735 shots aimed at Netizens during the game.

Internet

We used Internet to connect the offline and online worlds.

Server

Server

Server or the big brain working in wowz technology was dedicated for a number of essential tasks. First of all, it put all the players, who wanted to play within the next 4 days, in line. There were over 3000 of them, so the brain was quite busy. Apart from that, the server sent all commands to the cannon, which were aiming at Netizens. Thanks to it you could see what was going on during the Great Snowball Fight. Frankly speaking, without the brain there would be no fun, nothing.

With extreme amount of sacrifice and sniper’s eye, in the middle of the snowball battle, the observer granted badges and extras with mysterious names such as: “way off the mark”, “nice ice breaker”, “sniper”, “hidden master”, “holly golly”, “confier buster” “the boss” “bull’s eye”.

The Cannon

The Cannon (compressor)

The Cannon is our own hand made invention we are very proud of. The construction consisted of plywood and metal elements. Mechanics based on servomechanisms. Shooting involved a controlled decompressing amount of air collected in special pressure chambers located in the cannon, with the help of a returning valve. A home compressor generated pressure in the chambers . The cannon also had a special snowball feeder. It might sound a bit puzzling, but in general we had lots of fun while building the cannon. You can watch our making-of video. Except our video producer, who tested the shooting power on his own head, nobody got hurt during the production.

Camera

CAMERA+STREAMING

A regular Internet camera was attached to the cannon so that everyone could see the snowball fight live, and adobe flash media live encoder immediately sent the motion picture to communication server, which next showed it to the world. Thanks to such a solution you could watch and join Great Snowball Fight in a real time.

Accelerometer

The Technologies

The game seems to be quite simple, but in order to make it work, our engineers had a lot to do. Fortunately, such task are just piece of cake for them. Yet, it was much more difficult to explain one thing the easiest way possible – HOW IT WORKS?

  • Arduino

it controlled the engines that were moving the cannon and shooting the snowballs
  • Adobe Flash Media Live Encoder

it transmitted the video picture to communication server
  • Wowza Server

    the brain of entire operation
  • Accelerometer

it counted all Netizens’ good shots aimed at virtual players

The Fun

Parcels full of white snowballs were sent to all Netizens’ clients, and as far as we know, the clients’ office also turned into winter firing ranges – this was our aim – TO HAVE FUN, the entire world understands and enjoys!

The game was held in offices, on Internet .. and most of all, at Netizens’.

Facebook

We made a big buzz around it on Facebook. Internet users, without having to login or register, could easily join in the Great Snowball Fight. Once they succeeded in shooting at special places or the employees, they received badges they could share with others, and engage friends to join in the fun.
